What to do when you’re falling for a friend

1 Dec 2012 romeo1010

It might happen on a number of occasions that you might find yourself falling in love with a friend. A relationship that started as one of friendship may soon convert into an inexplicable attachment, and you might consider yourself falling for that person. The more time you spend with each other, the stronger your bond might get, and you might experience a strange attachment forming between you both. Hence, a relationship which started with the innocence of friendship may convert into a relationship of love. It is fairly common that at one point of time in a friendship, one person may fall for the other. This leads to a number of complications though. It may either be that things go perfectly smoothly and conclude in a relationship that will keep both partners happy. In the other case, it might be such that the entire friendship may fall apart. Hence, one needs to be careful in such situations because these are extremely delicate matters.
When two people first become friends, and then fall in love, it is the stepping stone for a perfect relationship. This relationship would last really long and the bond would be very strong because it has the foundation of a friendship. When you’re best friends, you share secrets with each other that you might not share with your partner. Hence, when you progress from friendship to love, the awkwardness between you both is eliminated and you both understand each other perfectly. Also, the very fact that you both fell for each other also leads to the conclusion that you both have a very good rapport and understanding with each other. But in some cases, things do get complicated. We enlist a few things to do when you find yourself falling for your friend.
  1. Give it time – Wait a few days to just recheck whether it is love or infatuation. If after a few days, you feel the same way about her, then you’re in love.
  2. Drop a few hints – When you’re done with the first step, then the next step is to test what she thinks of you. Drop in a few casual hints that’ll get her thinking along the same lines. Flirt with her casually. Then notice her response, if she blushes or if it lifts her mood, then you have a chance. If she’s very casual and does not notice it, then she hasn’t quite thought of you that way.
  3. Decide – This is an important part. You will have to analyze and decide. You must know what’s at stake in this stage. You might perhaps loose the friend forever if you decide to approach her that way. Even if you don’t, she might never be the same again for you. Hence, you must be careful and take a calculated risk. If you consider your friendship more important than the relationship, then you must perhaps abstain from doing it. This is the complicated bit, and the decision that will be taken by you will alter according to the peculiar facts of every case.

Romance in this Busy World

romeo1010

Somehow when we think of the world a few decades ago, and even in the good old 90s, we think of life as one with so much leisure, so much simplicity and so much time. Coming back to the present age, you think of life as perhaps the busiest it has been. The world is both volatile and taxing. On one hand, you might have to constantly work hard. Be it your job, where you have to work to meet your expenses and also save money, because the economy might go down any time, or college, where you have to work hard and be brilliant if you want to land a nice job, life really springs surprises at you. At the same time, the competition is at an all time high, thanks to the ever growing population. Hence, today, you might have to work much harder than what your forefathers did in order to lead a decent life.
The downside of this lifestyle is your personal relationships. It might have been years since you met your childhood best friend. It might also have been years since you last went out with your family for a good old outing. It also affects your romance rather badly. Since you both are busy working all the time, you never seem to find time for each other. In the earlier times, people had a lot of time for each other, and they bonded well in all those times. Today, romances are very volatile due to the increasing pressure from outside, hence, there is a greater level of divorces in this world today.
It is important to work and lead a decent lifestyle, no doubt. But that alone can’t guarantee you happiness. What you also need is good relationships, because they can provide you with true happiness. Hence, we’re made a list of a few tips that will help you in keeping your romance levels high and interesting while not sacrificing on the work as well.
  1. Use technology – The modern world has a great thing – amazing technology. You had landline phones in the ancient times, but today you have everything from cell phones to video chat. Hence, when you have such awesome technology at your disposal, you must make great use of it to remain in touch. You must text your partner, not always, but quite frequently. It doesn’t take too much of time, but does a great deal. Also, you can do things such as video chats that will help you a lot to recreate the magic of the romance.
  2. Resolve matters – When misunderstandings or other things crop up, just take a few moments off from your work to talk it off and immediately resolve it. If you delay it, you will forget to do it with all that extra work you have, and that will worsen the relationship.
  3. Do special things – Whenever you have a little time, which you will, do special things. Go for special dinners, special outings, and make the most of the moments you spend together.

Africa: Reconstructive Surgery Brings Hope to Survivors of Genital Cutting

Tonte Ikoluba was 13 years old when her grandmother came to her family home to circumcise her. She remembers it as if it were yesterday. Her grandmother coaxed her and told her not to worry. It was important she go through the rite, she was told, in order to become a respectable woman and increase her chances of getting married some day.
"I closed my eyes tight and tried to gather my courage," she said. She wanted to wait a little bit, but her grandmother and another woman held her down.
Tonte does not like talking about that day. The memory is too painful. She was scared. Her sister had the procedure done before her, and she bled so much that she had to have a blood transfusion in the Malian hospital.
Female circumcision -- otherwise known as female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) -- is defined by the World Health Organization as "all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia. It also involves any other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons."
FGM/C is a millennia-long custom that practicing communities believe is an essential part of raising a girl properly. About 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM/C, according to the World Health Organization. Some 92 million girls 10 years old and above who have undergone the practice are in Africa, the agency adds.
Health consequences
The practice has several immediate and long-term health consequences, says Marci Bowers, a gynaecologist in San Mateo, California. Many women like Tonte suffer for years after being circumcised because of scarring and frequent infections. The pain is constant, says Tonte. She is 35 years old and is still single, she says, because she cannot bear to have anyone touch her "down there." Not even a doctor.
Dr. Bowers told Africa Renewal that pain is a major problem for her patients. The majority have undergone the most severe kind of cutting, called infibulation, in which the clitoris is removed and the labia are stitched together to form a cover over the vagina. Only a small hole is left for urine, menstrual blood, childbirth and intercourse.
Dr. Bowers is a surgeon who performs "reversal surgery" on her patients to repair the vagina and clitoris so that these women can have more normal lives. "The scar tissue that forms around the clitoris and encases it is uncomfortable. But in the cases where women have been infibulated, by dividing that infibulation, for the first time since the incision they are able to pass urine normally, they are able to pass menses normally. And they are able to have sex or childbirth without a constricting band that prevents those things."
She says the surgery is 100 per cent effective in alleviating pain for patients. "The relief that overwhelms these women has been one of the reasons women are glad they went through this surgery."
Advances in surgery
Reconstructive surgery for patients who have gone through FGM/C has been around for a long time. But the technique of clitoral repair surgery was only developed in 2004 by a French urologist, Dr. Pierre Foldès. It entails opening the scar tissue, exposing the nerves buried underneath and grafting on fresh tissue. The procedure reduces the chronic pain associated with FGM/C, allows women to regain clitoral sensitivity and even permits some to attain orgasm.
In Burkina Faso, where Dr. Foldès has trained several surgeons, the procedure has been offered since 2006. Previously, in 2001, the government sponsored and introduced a more general genital repair surgery, reports the National Commission Against Excision. Meanwhile, in an effort to make the clitoral repair surgery readily available in Africa, seven surgeons in Dakar, Senegal, recently received certification after training under Dr. Foldès and Senegalese oncologist Dr. Abdoul Aziz Kassé.
Dr. Bowers was also Dr. Foldès' pupil and has now volunteered to do similar work. She will be operating on Tonte Ikoluba for free, and has pledged to match every donation to the cause with her own money. Together with the Campaign Against Female Genital Mutilation (CAGeM), an international network devoted to countering FGM, she will help make the surgery available in Africa too. The organization was established in 1998 by a group of women doctors in Africa, in response to the high rate of infant and maternal deaths in communities that practice FGM/C. It is also working in New York: the practice is becoming more common in the US because of a growing population of immigrants from such communities.
CAGeM is building a hospital in Port Harcourt, in southern Nigeria. To be called Restoration Hospital, it will provide the surgery for free and be open to any patient from West Africa. Dr. Aberie Ikinko, director of the organization's US branch, explains: "We have already 400 women on the waiting list. We are also training the local doctors so that when we leave, they can continue to perform the surgeries for free."
Most women in Africa cannot afford the surgery, nor are they able to travel far. Dr. Ikinko told Africa Renewal that funds are being raised in New York to send supplies in preparation for the hospital's opening. CAGeM hopes Restoration Hospital will also be able to offer other free medical treatments for women, including operations for fistula, a hole that can develop over many days of obstructed labour, which is often caused by FGM/C.
Campaign for change
A high-level event at the UN General Assembly in September 2012 called for increased commitment and concerted action from governments to end the practice of FGM/C. A UN resolution aimed at intensifying global efforts to end FGM/C was approved for the first time on 26 November. Chantal Compaoré, the first lady of Burkina Faso who championed the resolution, hopes that African countries will sign it and take ownership of the ban.
After two decades of global efforts to end this practice, many communities are also now embracing change. Close to two thousand communities across Africa abandoned the practice in 2011 alone, according to a report by the Joint Programme for the Acceleration of the Abandonment of FGM/C. Set up in 2008 by the UN Children's Fund and the UN Population Fund, the programme seeks to spur change through a culturally sensitive, human rights-based approach that promotes collective abandonment of the practice.
Some previous strategies that regarded the rite as "barbaric" and "backward" met with resentment and backlash from local communities. Rather than ending FGM/C, such campaigns pushed supporters to simply hide the practice and scared them from seeking medical care, thereby placing young girls' lives at continued risk. Recently, educational efforts have been playing a more central role in campaigns to end the practice, with many activists choosing to present FGM/C as a public health issue and concentrating on the harmful and sometimes deadly effects it has on young girls and women.
Although there is renewed hope for a global ban on the practice, so far there has been little focus on solutions for the many girls and women who have already undergone cutting. The possibility of reconstructive surgery is therefore a godsend to young women like Tonte. "They took away part of my womanhood," she says. "I just feel very deprived. I want to be whole again."

He was admitted to the hospital out of “an abundance of caution,” the source said, adding  it was to make sure the bronchitis does not turn into pneumonia.
Bush, the oldest living former president, has a type of Parkinson’s disease that afflicts his legs. He gets around mostly by using a wheelchair.

Terrorism: Army to kick civilians out of barracks

November 30, 2012

THE military has commenced the mass eviction of civilians from barracks across the country, Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, said on Thursday.
The eviction of non-soldiers from  barracks is coming on the heels of two successful attacks  by suspected terrorists in the first two days of this week.
Two car bombers had on Sunday struck at the St. Andrew Military Protestant Church inside the prestigious Armed Forces Command and Staff College,  in Jaji, near Kaduna. The college  houses the officers and men of the Infantry Centre and School as well as  the Nigerian Army Peace Keeping Centre .
Also on Monday, gunmen, numbering 40, launched an attack on the office of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Abuja, where suspects were being held. Two policemen and one of the gunmen were killed in the incident.
Ihejirika said at the closing of the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Asaba, Delta State, that he had already issued a directive to commanders in charge of military formations to take immediate action in ridding the military formations of illegal occupants.
The COAS also warned that the leadership of the Army would ensure that reported lapses were treated decisively.
He said, “That one (purging the barracks of illegal occupants) is obvious. I have already informed the commanders and they know. The commanders would not wait for the Chief of Army Staff before taking action. Rather, from next week, I want to see action in respect of illegal squatters and similar things.”
The Commander in charge of Army Engineering, Maj. Gen. Olaniyi, who took the last presentation at the conference, had called attention to the fact that barracks being rehabilitated were accommodating a large number of civilians in places like the Ikeja Cantonment and Asaba.
Olaniyi, who said that the Ojo Cantonment had become haven for criminals, warned that unless decisive steps were taken, even foreigners would be more than soldiers in some rehabilitated barracks.
He had said that the number of civilians living in the cantonment was even more than that of soldiers.
Ihejirika insisted that the bombing at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College was avoidable, stressing that absence a perimeter fence did not offer any commander an excuse to allow such an  incident to happen.
He said that about 80 of the barracks in the country had not been fenced and urged the commanders to put in their best in the area of intelligence gathering and security maintenance.
Meanwhile, Ihejirika has promised Nigerians “a more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies” in 2013.
He said that the military would be decisive in 2013, stressing that it was part of the decision of the conference that unit commanders  must pay  more attention to effective liaison, supervision and monitoring of personnel under them.
The COAS said, “Nigerians should expect more comprehensive action by the military and all the security agencies. Part of the decisions arrived at is that unit commanders should liaise more and they should supervise and monitor their personnel more closely than they had done in the past. So 2013 would be decisive.”
He said that the Nigerian Army had been collaborating with other security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, the Nigerian Intelligence Agency and foreign bodies to enhance intelligence  gathering  and dissemination.
He said the conference also agreed on the need for “national intelligence fusion” to enhance intelligence gathering.
He said, “The conference also emphasised the need for national intelligence fusion. What it means is that all the various measures are going to be fast tracked to ensure that intelligence is further enhanced.
“And you should know that it is a running battle because the people you are fighting are people within the country. So they know what measures you are even taking. They know that. So that is why I also drew the attention of commanders to devise new tactics in dealing with the problem.
“Certain groups are going to be set up too to monitor the commanders in the field and, no mistake about it, command responsibility is one area we will emphasise more next year.”
Ihejirika also ordered the painting of all operational vehicles of the Nigerian Army donated by state governments, corporate bodies, in Army colour.
He also said that the different uniforms of the Army should be used only for authorised specified activities.
Also on Thursday,   the  Agence France Presse  reported that  Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, had expressed solidarity with global jihadists, saying the United States and Britain “should witness that we are with our mujahedeen brothers.”
Shekau, in the  39-minute video posted on jihadists forum, was quoted to have said in Arabic that,”The world should witness, and America, Britain, Nigeria and other crusaders, meaning America and Britain, should witness, and the Jews of Israel who are killing the Muslims in Palestine should witness… that we are with our mujahedeen brothers in the cause of Allah everywhere.”

Vatican disciplines Austrian priest

November 30, 2012

The Vatican has cracked down on a prominent Austrian Roman Catholic priest who has been leading a disobedience campaign to openly challenge Roman Catholic teachings on celibacy and women priests, Reuters reports.
The Vatican said on Thursday it had stripped Father Helmut Schueller of the right to use title monsignor and said he also was no longer a “Chaplain of His Holiness”. Schueller remains a priest.
Schueller, a former deputy to Vienna’s archbishop, Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn, had been given the honorary title in his capacity as head of the Austrian branch of the Catholic charity group Caritas.
Schueller is head of the group “Call to Disobedience”, which has broad public backing in opinion polls and says it represents about 10 percent of the Austrian clergy.
Nearly 150,000 Austrians left the Church in 2011-2012, many in reaction to sexual abuse scandals.
The group wants Church rules changed so that priests can marry and women can become priests. It has said it will break Church rules by giving communion to Protestants and divorced Catholics who remarry.
Schueller told Austrian media that the Vatican decision had not shaken his principles.
Reformist Austrian Catholics have for decades challenged the conservative policies of Benedict and his predecessor John Paul, creating protest movements and advocating changes the Vatican refuses to make.
Schueller has met like-minded clergy in Austria and abroad since launching the “Call to Disobedience” group. Catholic reform groups in Germany, Ireland and the United States have made similar demands from the Church.
The Catholic Church does not allow priests to marry and teaches that it has no authority to allow women to become priests because Jesus willingly chose only men as his apostles when he instituted the priesthood at the Last Supper.

Euro zone joblessness hits record, inflation eases

Fri Nov 30, 2012

Euro zone joblessness has reached a new high and the poor state of the economy is reducing inflation to near two-year lows, raising the prospect of further interest cuts by the European Central Bank.
As the euro zone sinks into its second recession since 2009, the number of people out of work in the euro zone rose by 173,000 people in October to almost 19 million people unemployed, the EU's statistics office Eurostat said on Friday.
That pushed joblessness to the highest level since the euro was introduced in 1999, at 11.7 percent of the working population, illustrating the human impact of a public debt and banking crisis that has reverberated across the world.
Struggling companies and indebted households have also lost the confidence to spend and invest, evident in the annual consumer price inflation reading for November, which dropped to 2.2 percent in November from 2.5 percent in October.
Consumer price inflation was at its lowest level since December 2010. One of the smallest rises in energy price inflation in a year helped to bring inflation to near the ECB's target of near, but just under 2 percent, opening the door to more rate cuts by the bank.
The ECB last cut its main refinancing rate in July, to a record low of 0.75 percent, and economists in a Reuters poll this week were more divided than ever on whether there will be another rate cut early next year.
"The outlook is still bleak," said Thomas Costerg, an economist at Standard Chartered in London, who sees an ECB rate cut in the first three months of next year.
"We think that ECB President Mario Draghi will leave the door open for more stimulus in the coming months," he said.
The cost of borrowing for banks and households in the euro zone is already at a record low of 0.75 percent and economists question whether further rate cuts will do much good, because of a lack of confidence among banks to lend.
The central bank may decide to postpone a rate cut until after its next meeting on December 6 as it tries to keep markets focused on the benefits of its recently-announced plan to buy the bonds of governments in distress and keep their borrowing costs down.
The bond-buying program has calmed nervy investors who predicted the break-up of the euro zone just a few months ago and many are moving back into Italian and Spanish bond markets.
But the euro zone's economic reality is one of a slowing German economy, stagnation in France, recession for Italy and Spain and an outright depression in Greece, with no signs of a quick recovery.
"GROWTH-FRIENDLY" CUTS
Many economists blame the spending cuts implemented by almost all governments in the past three years to try to bring down their deficits that ballooned over the past decade.
Portugal, for instance, shed more than one in 20 public sector jobs in the first nine months of 2012.
But in a shift in tone, the International Monetary Fund and the European Commission say now that they may have been too aggressive in pushing for government cutbacks. The Commission is now advocating "growth-friendly fiscal consolidation".
Draghi, speaking on French radio on Friday, tried to sound cautiously upbeat and has avoided the word "recession" in his public comments in recent weeks. "The recovery for most of the euro zone will certainly begin in the second half of 2013," he told Europe 1 radio.
Yet even the European Commission's forecast of 0.1 percent growth next year looks optimistic and many banks, from Citigroup to Standard Chartered, expect the recession to continue and unemployment to keep rising.
There are also wide divergences in unemployment in the euro zone, with the jobless rate at around 4 percent in Austria, 16 percent in Portugal and above 25 percent in Spain and Greece.
"The number of unemployed, which better captures the shorter-term dynamics, is showing little sign of abating," said J.P. Morgan economist Greg Fuzesi. "Even with our expectation of a modest recovery next year, the unemployment rate could reach 12 percent quite soon," he said.

Former Indian prime minister I.K. Gujral dies

Nov 30, 7:25 AM EST

NEW DELHI (AP) -- Former Indian prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral, who gave a new impetus to improving India's relations with its neighbors, has died after a year-long illness. He was 92.
Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said Gujral died in a hospital near New Delhi on Friday. He was admitted there 10 days ago with a lung infection.
Gujral became India's 12th prime minister when he headed a shaky coalition government in 1997.
Although his term lasted only 11 months, Gujral made a mark in India's foreign relations by promoting friendly ties with its neighbors, including archrival Pakistan.
Popularly referred to as the "Gujral Doctrine," the policy was one of generosity in trade and other bilateral relations without expecting reciprocity from India's smaller neighbors.

INEC prosecutes 200 electoral offenders – Jega

November 28, 2012

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday in Abuja said the commission had successfully prosecuted 200 of the 870,000 electoral offenders.
He said at the INEC/civil society dialogue on plans and progress toward the 2015 elections, that the prosecution was over offences arising from the 2011 voter registration and general elections.
Jega said the prosecution had been “a big problem’’ because of paucity of fund and manpower.
“In actual fact some of those apprehended have been prosecuted and convicted but the number is just too small compared to those remaining.
“A youth corper was also prosecuted and sentenced in Ondo for electoral manipulation.”
He said the police was in charge of prosecuting offenders until it was handed over to INEC, adding that the task was beyond the capacity of INEC and should not be left with the commission, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
He said if INEC was saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting electoral offenders its major mandate would suffer because the quantum of offenders would be too much for the commission.
Jega called on government to work on the “Uwais panel report, on electoral reform, that recommended that a separate body should be set up to handle electoral offences.”

How to tell if you’re in Love

Love is indeed a wonderful feeling, and it alone has the capacity to life up our mood and improve our entire life. Wealth and other material things are alone not capable of making us happy. In fact, they are minor things in our life. Our main motive in life is love, and we yearn for love. One type of such a relationship is the relationship of a couple. We get into a lot of couple relationships in our life, and some of the people are lucky enough to spend their life with just one partner.
A couple relationship provides us with a type of security and confidence. We know, there is somebody who loves us, and somebody we can depend upon when we need them. We also know that when we go home after a long day of work, we won’t be lonely. We’ll have somebody who we can talk with and spend our time. When we go out, we can look forward to having them with us and spending some quality time together. Hence, that person becomes really close to us and such relationships are integral part of people’s lives.
Falling in love in one of the best feelings that man can experience. It’s a magical feeling, and the entire world around you changes. It’s as if the entire world is happy, and everything is filled with joy. You have so much to look forward to in your life, and suddenly, things look very bright. That is the level of impact that falling in love can have on you.
There are some signs that you can tell that you’re falling in love with a person. They are –
  1. The world seems awesome – You remain happy and everything around you seems great. You feel full of energy and willing to do things and talk to people. Overall, the enthusiasm towards all aspects of your life increases, and you are suddenly a different person. There is a lot of positive energy that surrounds you and you feel on top of the world.
  2. Jealousy – It is one of the acid tests of love. When you’re in love, you simply cannot stand the sight of your love interest talking to somebody else of your own gender. Even if they are friends or whatever, you cannot tolerate it. It feels even worse when you hear praises about another guy from the girl you love, and you get instantly pissed off. You get really possessive about her and feel like shielding her from all the other people. When she hangs out with her other male friends, and especially when you’re not there, you get really frustrated and impatient.
  3. Care – You start caring about the person much more. Whenever that person is not feeling well or is a little upset, you immediately get very concerned. You go ahead instantly to console her and make that person feel better. When that person is unhappy, it seems as if there is something that is making you unhappy.

How to Get a Person to Like You

dating & relationship inspiration by romeo1010

There may be a huge number of occasions when you really want a person to like you, but the other person may not notice you at all. Even if they notice you, they never really seem to like you, or see you in the way you see them. Some of them might just consider you to be friends, and nothing else. So to come to their notice, and for them to want to be in a relationship with you, you might just have to do a few things. You really would love to get into a relationship with them, and believe that you’ll be really happy with them. But that will take a bit of an effort. Although that varies with each situation, there are a few universal things that you can do to get a better bond with that person.
  1. Find out about their interests – Find out about what things they are interested in. It’ll give you a lot of matter to talk to them about. Also, they’ll quickly notice you that way. For example, if they take interest in photography and you’re a very good photographer in your college or office, they’ll quickly notice you and want to be with you. The interactions between you both will increase, and subsequently the attraction. You can talk about such things, and slowly your interest for each other will arouse even more. Slowly, you’ll find yourself being very good friends with the other person, and then it is upto you as to which way you take such a relationship.
  2. Be good friends with their friends – They will have a few best friends who will have a great impact on their minds, whether they realize it or not. Hence, it becomes really important to be in the good books of their best friends. When you’re great with their best friends, you get a twofold advantage. First, you can easily know about the other person’s feelings and secrets. Secondly, when their friends like you, they will start liking you as well.
  3. Be good at things – Whether it be academics or sports, be good at things. You could also be good at other things. When you’re good at things, you get really popular. When you’re popular, people tend to like you and form crushes on you. Who knows, you might just get a new admirer who is the person you admire? Also, in any case, when somebody really popular and famous likes you, it’s very difficult to say no. So it’s a win-win situation for you.
  4. When you talk to them, be nice – When you talk to them, don’t show too much attitude. Be nice, simple. Be whoever you are. Don’t try to be fake. You would have an idea about what kind of a person they are. You could talk about their interests, and try to be patient. It’s really good when you listen to someone, because you can know about the person and also at the same time you can arouse their interest in you.

Kenyan Victoria Kimani Signed to Chocolate City

Victoria Kimani
Kenya's Victoria Kimani is now in the loving embrace of Nigerian music label Chocolate City, after a long search by the business outfit to tap into some local talent.
Vickie was snapped up by the hit-makers who've been trying for more than a year to get a Kenyan on board, as part of their expansion plans.
Chocolate City is the label responsible for Ice Prince, M.I., Jessie Jags, and Brymo, who have in turn worked hard for their money by churning out hit song after hit song after hit song.
It's been an equally long search for the uber talented singer and songwriter Victoria, who has been eager to get a more solid output for her music.
But the search is over. The two found each other reportedly during an African music tour in the states, which Ice Prince was a part of.
Vickie is veteran rapper Bamboo's younger sister, and one of the strongest RnB voices to come out of Kenya, even though she is based in the United States.
The 20 plus year old is working on her debut album, looking for her own shine after staying in the background for too long.
She has collaborated with artists like Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes and Casssie, among others as well as spent a lot of man-hours writing music for Konvict Music.
Her signing comes as Chocolate City are planning a physical presence in the country, most like by early next year.
Two Kenyans who have been tied to the outfit in the past are radio presenter Angela Angwenyi and Rukia Njoki.

South Sudan: Silent Violence of Hidden Crisis in Jonglei

press release

Many women and Chilren are among the victims of Jonglei health crisis.

Johannesburg — A report released today from Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) highlights the devastating impact of violence on the lives and health of civilians in South Sudan's Jonglei state. Women and children as young as four months old are among the victims. Healthcare is threatened as medical facilities are targeted and destroyed.
Jonglei state has a long history of inter-communal cattle-raiding; however, since 2009 thousands of civilians, women and children have been caught up in violent attacks, which usually occur in the dry season. A disarmament campaign process in mid-2012 led to widespread insecurity and was accompanied by abuses against civilians. Further fighting between a militia group and the South Sudan armed forces in Jonglei compounded the violence and caused new displacement at the height of the malaria season.
"Patients arrive in MSF clinics seeking treatment for injuries describing how they have been forced to make devastating decisions about which children to flee with and which children to leave behind," says Chris Lock year, MSF Operational Manager. "What we are seeing is an emergency; the lives and health of Jungle's population are hanging by a thread. The dry season is now upon us, making movement around the area possible again, and we fear a further spike in violence, injury and displacement."
MSF's report South Sudan's hidden crisis: how violence against civilians is devastating communities and preventing access to life saving healthcare in Jonglei contains harrowing accounts of civilians caught up in attacks on villages.
A woman treated by MSF tells of an attack in March this year: "They threw children in the fire. If the child can run, they will shoot them with the gun; if they are small and cannot run, they will kill them with a knife." More than 50 percent of gunshot wounds treated by MSF after one attack in January 2012 were women and children.
The indirect consequences of the violence are less visible but equally serious. Entire communities have had to flee for their lives deep into the bush. Without shelter, food or safe drinking water, they are susceptible to malaria, pneumonia, malnutrition and diarrhoea.
Healthcare has come under attack in Jonglei state. MSF health facilities were destroyed or looted in Pieri in August 2011, Pibor and Lekwongole in December 2011, Lekwongole in August 2012 and Gumuruk in September 2012, denying healthcare to an already vulnerable population.
MSF is the only provider of free high quality healthcare in northern and central Jonglei, with six medical facilities serving a population of 287,000. From January 2011 to October 2012, MSF treated hundreds of wounded people and provided more than 227, 851 medical consultations.
"Today we are sharing the medical consequences as our teams see them on the ground," says Lockyear. "Jonglei is in the grip of an emergency. MSF remains committed to providing neutral and impartial healthcare in Jonglei, however we fear there may be even more medical needs among people who cannot reach our clinics – due to sheltering in the bush or for fear of travelling to seek care. MSF calls on all armed groups to respect medical humanitarian facilities and staff."

Nigeria: Ex-ANPP Boss, Two Others Killed

Bauchi — Three people, including the District Head of Gudumbali, Zanna Mulima and former local council chairman of All Nigeria Peoples' Party, ANPP, have been reported killed in separate attacks in Borno and Bauchi states, weekend.
In Maiduguri, Borno State capital, the former ANPP boss, Alhaji Tar Kusurambe was killed by unidentified gunmen. Two other persons were killed in Bauchi, even as an explosive planted in the house of a retired police officer at Gudum Sayawa, was successfully defused.
15 gunmen
our reporters gathered that unknown gunmen, numbering about 15, stormed Gudun Sayawa, a suburb of Bauchi at about 8pm and killed the two persons.
One of the victims, Mrs. Alheri Ayuba, a mother of three, was killed on her way from a neighbourhood, while Iliya Duba was shot dead as he was about to go to bed.
Some residents of the area, however, alleged that the attack was targeted at a retired police officer. The explosive was found atop the roof of the said officer's house.
According to sources, some of the residents of Gudun Sayawa put distressed calls to the anti-bomb squad, which quickly evacuated the explosive.
Some members of the vigilante group in the area, however, claimed that the police reportedly prevented them from pursuing the gunmen with the aim of arresting them in the premises of a company where they hid shortly after the gun attack.
They vowed to retaliate, blaming the Isa Yuguda's administration for failing to address the insecurity challenges experienced in the area, alleging religious intolerance.
9 in Zango
Some weeks ago, nine people were killed in Zango, near Gudun Sayawa, in similar circumstances.
Among hundreds of sympathisers, who stormed the area to see the level of damage, was Director-General Inter-Religious Council, Pastor Kennedy Masau.
Masau, however, condemned the incident, saying it was not only barbaric but uncalled for. He called on the people to be at alert and guard themselves against future occurrence to ensure peace, unity and tranquillity in the state.
Attempts to confirm the incident from the Bauchi State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ladan Mohammed, were futile.
Meanwhile, Kusura-mbe was shot dead at his residence at 2am in Magumeri town, barely two days after returning from Saudi Arabia on the 2012 hajj exercise.

Hit-and-run driver kills baby, injures mother

Reported November 26, 2012

Late Master Adeyemi

When on January 14, 2012, Biyi and Bose Bolaji had their first baby, family and friends rejoiced with them. However, just 10 months after their bundle of joy arrived, he met his death after being hit by a reckless driver in Abuja.
our reporter learnt that Bose and another bystander, Emmanuel Amairo, were hit by the unidentified driver’s car.
Biyi told our correspondent that his wife, who was carrying his late son, Adeyemi, was about to get a cab along Airport Road and were standing by the roadside when they were run over by the car.
He said, “That Thursday, my wife and baby were on Airport Road attempting to get a cab to my friend’s house. Suddenly, a Toyota Corolla ran into them as well as another man who was standing beside them. The driver also hit a nearby pole before finally stopping.
“Bystanders and sympathisers responded immediately to rescue them. The driver just came down from his car and a few minutes later, fled on foot. He did not even bother to assist them in getting to the hospital.”
Biyi said his wife sustained a fracture of her leg and bruises all over her body and was immediately rushed to Garki Hospital while the baby was taken to National Hospital.
our reporter learnt that the driver abandoned his vehicle and since then had not made effort to contact the victims.
“The consultant neurosurgeon told me on Friday that my baby was brain dead and was on life support at the Intensive Care Unit. We continued to pray and hoped that his condition would improve. On Monday, after my wife had been discharged, I took her to dress her wounds when I received a call from the doctor that the baby had died,” he said.
Biyi told our correspondent that upon investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle’s number plate, AL 585 DGE EDO, was owned by one Alaibe Henry, a Nigerian Immigration officer.
He said he immediately reported the matter to Lugbe Police Division but added that it could not be ascertained if it was the owner of the vehicle that drove the car when the incident occurred.
The second victim, Emmanuel Amairo, told our correspondent that he could not remember all that happened because it happened so fast.
He said, “Everything happened so fast. I was standing at Voice of Nigeria Junction along Airport Road when a Toyota car just ran into me and another woman (Bose) and her baby. The vehicle hit me in the legs and I hit my forehead on the ground. We were all rushed to the National Hospital but the hospital rejected us.
“The lady (Bose)  and I were taken to Garki Hospital. I remained in the hospital for five days before being discharged. Even now I’m still in pain.”
Biyi said he was shocked that 12 days after, the driver had not deemed it fit to trace the victims.
“As a driver myself, if I run over even a goat, I stop and ask for the owner to apologise and if necessary, for restitution. I see no reason why they (victims) should have been left lying on the ground without medical aid sought for them”, he said.
Biyi said he had reported the matter to the immigration authorities but nothing had been done.
The Public Relations Officer, NIS, Mr. Joachim Olumba, said he wasn’t aware of the incident. He however said if the incident was true, then it was for the police to investigate.
“The victims ought to report to the police who are in charge of such investigations. It’s unlike an officer to act in such manner but if the police come to us for information, we will cooperate fully,” he said.
However, the Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, Doris England, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.
England however said the police had yet to get the identity of the driver.
“The vehicle has been recovered by the police and investigations are ongoing. We will use the registration number to get the identity and address of the driver,” she said.

Nigeria: Presidential Chat - Jonathan Warding Off Anxieties

President Goodluck Jonathan

Last Sunday's Presidential chat, about fourth in the series, was probably President Goodluck Jonathan's well conceived strategy to sketch out his pan-Nigerian view, react to some national questions, forge interaction with the nation, explain, defend crucial policies and standpoints of the government, reassure the electorate on the transformation course of the administration.
The format was markedly different from that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo which was a phone-in thing receiving calls on issues from people all over the country and the president responding.
President Goodluck Jonathan (middle), flanked from left by Mr. Ikeddy Isiguzo (Vanguard), Mr. Muhammed Kudu Abubakar (Nigerian Television Authority (NTA, Mrs. Olujobi (The Mirror) and Mr. Martins Oloja (The Guardian) during the Presidential Media Chat at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, recently.
Political analysts and critics believed that Goodluck Jonathan may have had foreknowledge of the issues to be raised and the questions packaged for him. But no one can be so emphatic about that.
However, the crux of the matter is that the country is riddled with so many socio-economic maladies, security challenges, seething with corruption and injustice appalling to the people who looked up to their president at the media chat to assuage and honestly, genuinely point the way to redemption. To a large extent, it was not exactly so.
Rather, the presidential media chat brought more questions than answers, leaving people more confused than before.
Eustace Folusho, an engineer with a construction firm, said the president was just beating about the bush.
"How can President Jonathan say that electricity supply has improved? As I was listening to the chat on TV, there was sudden blackout. PHCN took power. I had to look for a transistor radio to continue listening to the interview. It seemed that the government is only interested in the oil sector where cheap money comes from."
He added: "Jonathan was even justifying the involvement of some past heads of state in the power sector insinuating that because they are former heads of state does not mean they should not earn a living. I was shocked. It is so sad that these ex-leaders are coming back to bid for their companies to own distribution and generating companies in the power sector."

Nigeria: Actress Halima Abubakar's Cancer Support Strategy ... Good or Bad ?

Many have said popular Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar missed the point and could be playing with fire and her career for daring to cut her hair right down to the scalp because of a strategy to support cancer victims.
A statement from her reads "I was invited to participate in a cancer awareness campaign by Waodiva and MTN. They did workshops on cancer, and a lot of survivors attended. I cried when I saw them. It was really shocking that people can go through this kind of traumatic experience. I decided to take off my hair as a way of honoring them.
If you shave your hair, you understand better what it is. If you have someone who has gone through the ailment, you will understand what I am talking about. Who doesn't want hair? Hair is every woman's glory. Shaving my hair is my own way of supporting the call against this dreaded disease." - Halima
Reactions has since poured online with many pointing that she's supporting a good course in a wrong way. One anonymous wrote "My dad had cancer and the best you can do is to be there for them as a support through the process. Just that moral and emotional support makes a huge difference. As for shaving I really can't see the connection."
But Halima was defended by another, "For the cynicals here, no, she's not looking for your approval, she shaved her hair as a way of creating awareness about the dreadful disease, hopefully with this, people like myself will go get checked, let's not forget Remi Lagos died recently of cancer, so for anyone to come here and discredit what Halima has done is just beyond the realms of stupidity and ignorance!
One Tosan wrote "Celebs abroad shave their hair, and sell, the money is donated to cancer foundation to help the cure and research..pls Nigerian Celebs should study well before they copy!!, how has shaving her hair helped?"
While a Dina yet again defended Halima "All those saying there wasn't need for her to shave, I want to tell you something....If you want to feel pain, you inflict it on yourself, if Halima shaved her hair because of the cause of Cancer, that's how she wants to be part of it and feel what cancer patients go through. And if I may ask you all that condemn her action, what significant things have you done yourselves..."
The banter goes on and on... back and forth.
Cancer victims suffer hair loss because of the chemotherapy treatments they are subjected to and this is what Halima claims she is identifying with. But was this really the right way to support cancer victims?

Nigeria: 20 Mini-Skirt Ladies Massacred in Maiduguri, JTF Place Bounty On Boko Haram Leaders

Reported.

Maiduguri — Barely 24 hours after over ten people were slaughtered in Maiduguri, twenty ladies in mini skirts and trousers were yesterday slaughtered in their separate homes in the metropolis by yet to be identified terrorists.
Also the Joint Task Force, Operation 'Restore Order', Friday, placed a bounty on suspected terrorists and members of Boko Haram.
This ugly development in Maiduguri is one of its kind, as many believed that most of the daily killings in Borno are only targeted at men and security agencies.
Stranded commuters on their way to Maiduguri.
The slaughtering of about twenty different ladies, our correspondent gathered, took place in the early hours of yesterday precisely at about 1 to 2am when most of residents were still asleep in their houses due to the curfew imposed by state government.
A source told our correspondent that the most hit areas were Mary wards, few meters away from the University of Maiduguri, one of the places accommodating students of the institution living off-Campus due to accommodation shortage.
Also affected according to investigation, were ladies living close to the black spots areas of Gwange, London Chiki, Abbagaram, Kaleri areas where series of killings and bomb blasts had occurred in the past, killing JTF officers.
When contacted on phone, both the JTF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa and the Police Commissioner, Mr. Yuguda Abdullahi said that they are not in Maiduguri, the state capital to confirm the incident.
But a top JTF Commander said, he had directed his men to the affected areas yesterday morning to evacuate the remains of over twenty girls slaughtered within the Maiduguri metropolis.
N50m bounty placed on Boko Haram leaders
Meanwhile, the Joint Task Force, Operation 'Restore Order', Maiduguri, have declared the suspected terrorists wanted and placed a reward on each of them. They are wanted in connection with terrorist activities particularly in the region that led to the killings, bombings and assassinations of some civilians, religious leaders, traditional rulers, businessmen, politicians, civil servants and security personnel amongst others. They are also wanted for arson and destruction of properties worth several millions of Naira.
A statement listed 19 alleged senior members of the extremist group blamed for hundreds of deaths in connection with its insurgency in northern and central Nigeria as suspects.
The rewards ranged from N50million for the suspected leader of the group, Abubakar Shekau, to N10 million for various Boko Haram "commanders".
Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, who issued the statement on behalf of the Military Task Force operating in the region did not respond to phone calls. Violence linked to Boko Haram's insurgency is believed to have left over 3,000 people dead since 2009, including killings of security forces.

Larry Hagman dead at 81, portrayed notorious TV villain J.R. Ewing

Larry Hagman, who created one of American television's most supreme villains in the conniving, amoral oilman J.R. Ewing of "Dallas," died on Friday, the Dallas Morning News reported. He was 81.
Hagman died at a Dallas hospital of complications from his battle with throat cancer, the newspaper said, quoting a statement from his family. He had suffered from liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver in the 1990s after decades of drinking.
Hagman's mother was stage and movie star Mary Martin and he became a star himself in 1965 on "I Dream of Jeannie," a popular television sitcom in which he played Major Anthony Nelson, an astronaut who discovers a beautiful genie in a bottle.
"Dallas," which made its premiere on the CBS network in 1978, made Hagman a superstar. The show quickly became one of the network's top-rated programs, built an international following and inspired a spin-off, imitators and a revival in 2012.
"Dallas" was the night-time soap-opera story of a Texas family, fabulously wealthy from oil and cattle, and its plot brimmed with back-stabbing, double-dealing, family feuds, violence, adultery and other bad behavior.
In the middle of it all stood Hagman's black-hearted J.R. Ewing - grinning wickedly in a broad cowboy hat and boots, plotting how to cheat his business competitors and cheat on his wife. He was the villain TV viewers loved to despise during the show's 356-episode run from 1978 to 1991.
"I really can't remember half of the people I've slept with, stabbed in the back or driven to suicide," Hagman said of his character in Time magazine.
In his autobiography, "Hello Darlin': Tall (and Absolutely True) Tales About My Life," Hagman wrote that J.R. originally was not to be the focus of "Dallas" but that changed when he began ad-libbing on the set to make his character more outrageous and compelling.
'WHO SHOT J.R.?'
To conclude its second season, the "Dallas" producers put together one of U.S. television's most memorable episodes in which Ewing was shot by an unseen assailant. That gave fans months to fret over whether J.R. would survive and who had pulled the trigger. In the show's opening the following season, it was revealed that J.R.'s sister-in-law, Kristin, with whom he had been having an affair, was behind the gun.
Hagman said an international publisher offered him $250,000 to reveal who had shot J.R. and he considered giving the wrong information and taking the money, but in the end, "I decided not to be so like J.R. in real life."
The popularity of "Dallas" made Hagman one of the best-paid actors in television and earned him a fortune that even a Ewing would have coveted. He lost some of it, however, in bad oil investments before turning to real estate.
"I have an apartment in New York, a ranch in Santa Fe, a castle in Ojai outside of L.A., a beach house in Malibu and thinking of buying a place in Santa Monica," Hagman said in a Chicago Tribune interview.
An updated "Dallas" series began in June 2012 on the TNT network with Hagman reprising his J.R. role with original cast members Linda Gray, who played J.R.'s long-suffering wife, Sue Ellen, and Patrick Duffy, who was his brother Bobby. The show was to focus on the sons of J.R. and Bobby.
Hagman had a wide eccentric streak. When he first met actress Lauren Bacall, he licked her arm because he had been told she did not like to be touched and he was known for leading parades on the Malibu beach and showing up at a grocery store in a gorilla suit. Above his Malibu home flew a flag with the credo "Vita Celebratio Est (Life Is a Celebration)" and he lived hard for many years.
In 1967, rock musician David Crosby turned him on to LSD, which Hagman said took away his fear of death, and Jack Nicholson introduced him to marijuana because Nicholson thought he was drinking too much.
Hagman had started drinking as a teenager and said he did not stop until the moment in 1992 when his doctor told him he had cirrhosis of the liver and could die within six months. Hagman wrote that for the past 15 years he had been drinking about four bottles of champagne a day, including while on the "Dallas" set.
LIVER TRANSPLANT
In July 1995, he was diagnosed with liver cancer, which led him to quit smoking, and a month later he underwent a liver transplant.
After giving up his vices, Hagman said he did not lose his zest for life.
"It's the same old Larry Hagman," he told a reporter. "He's just a littler sober-er."
Hagman was born on September 21, 1931, in Weatherford, Texas, and his father was a lawyer who dealt with the Texas oil barons Hagman would later come to portray. He was still a boy when his parents divorced and he went to Los Angeles with Martin, who would become a Broadway and Hollywood musical star.
Hagman eventually landed in New York to pursue acting, making his stage debut there in "The Taming of the Shrew." In New York, he married Maj Axelsson in 1954 while they were in a production of "South Pacific. The marriage produced two children, Heidi and Preston.
Hagman served in the Air Force, spending five years in Europe as the director of USO shows, and on his return to New York he took a starring role in the daytime soap "The Edge of Night." His breakthrough came in 1965 when he landed the "I Dream of Jeannie" role opposite Barbara Eden.
In his later years, Hagman became an advocate for organ transplants and an anti-smoking campaigner. He also was devoted to solar energy, telling the New York Times he had a $750,000 solar panel system at his Ojai estate, and made a commercial in which he portrayed a J.R. Ewing who had forsaken oil for solar power. He was a longtime member of the Peace and Freedom Party, a minor leftist organization in California.
Hagman told the Times that after death he wanted his remains to be "spread over a field and have marijuana and wheat planted and harvest it in a couple of years and then have a big marijuana cake, enough for 200 to 300 people. People would eat a little of Larry."

Saint Obi’s night of double treats

November 23, 2012 by AKEEM LASISI

Talented actor, Saint Obi, gives back to his fans and the business community at a night exuding glitz and glamour, AKEEM LASISI reports
Seasoned actor and producer, Saint Obi, used one stone to kill two birds on Saturday when he hosted the business community and his fans in Lagos. The night of Entertainment Extravaganza, held at the MUSON Centre, was conceived to offer corporate players fun, while Obi also premiered his new film – Truecolour – at the event.
It was a night of music, comedy, culture and super luck for the winner of a car that Saint Obi also offered for a raffle draw. Star comedians such as, Elenu and Tee A joined their colleague, MC Abbey, who was the compere. Abbey set the tone for laughter especially with his old joke that exploited the names of banks in Nigeria to depict how ladies come in various sizes and attitude.
For instance, while he likened an ‘enormous’ (fat) woman to former Oceanic Bank and a tall one to Zenith, he compared the one that jumps from one place/man to the other as being erstwhile Intercontinental.
But it was Elenu that turned laughter into a contagious disease that even Obi could hardly control. As expected, the clowns directed some cracks at Nollywood, with the usual insinuations that many of its producers and directors are not professionally discerning enough.
For example, while Abbey noted that it was not a strange sight to see a ghost with a shadow in a Nigerian film, Elenu added that it was also a trend for the ghost to look right and left repeatedly whenever she wants to cross a road.
Elenu’s joke that, however, emerged the hottest for the night revolved around policemen, based on a telephone conversation between them and a man playing an unwilling host to some armed robbers.
While the detail is better saved here, Elenu proved that he is widely talented as he moved from singing to dancing and more, when he had to imitate different personalities in his jokes.
Beyond such mock performances, musicians that include Tosin Martins and Sound Sultan were on hand to entertain the guests. Predictably, Martins performed his Oloo mi just as Sultan did Jagbajantis, among other songs. Both explored the stage with inspiring theatrics.
On the essence of the event, Obi said the business community, who he sought to drive out, were usually too busy to have swell timeout. So, creating one for them, he believes, is good. But he said it was also a way of strengthening the rapport between the entertainment industry and the corporate world.
Highpoint of the evening that stretched into late night was the presentation of a brand new Kia Rio to a lucky winner, Eniola Odukale, who came to unwind at the event.
Mrs. Odukale, who works with Resourcery Nigeria Limited, was speechless when her raffle ticket was announced.
Saint Obi has featured in many films that include Last Party, Sakobi, Heart of Gold, Candle Light, Executive Crime and Goodbye Tomorrow.
